What the figures actually describe
Hong Kong Talent Engage (HKTE) publishes monthly salary reference figures for sustainability and ESG professional roles. Its page also states minimum requirements of a relevant bachelor’s degree with on-the-job training or an industry course/programme, and at least three years of relevant ESG work experience.
If you are entering ESG for the first time: these are not entry-level starting salaries. They are not typical pay for ESG Peak students or graduates, job offers, or a promised return on course fees. HKTE does not present them as a guaranteed offer to any individual.
If you are exploring a move into ESG, try a free five-minute work sample and then review the October course and its conditions. Start with the work and entry requirements, not a salary headline.
| Role described by HKTE | HKD / month |

Why a role title is not a career forecast
“ESG” covers different work: collecting emissions data, preparing disclosures, coordinating suppliers, assessing governance controls, managing projects and advising a business. Even similar titles may require different industry knowledge, seniority and accountability. A salary reference for a Head of ESG says little about a first role in the field.
The HKTE page describes professional roles and a minimum experience requirement; it does not tell you the salary you would receive after a two-day course. A hiring decision and offer depend on the employer, the specific vacancy, your existing skills and relevant experience, and the work you can demonstrate. Completion of this course does not guarantee a job, promotion or salary increase.
A more useful career-change check
- Choose a target task, not only a title. Read current vacancies and note whether they ask for reporting, carbon accounting, supplier engagement, assurance or project delivery.
- Map transferable experience. Finance, operations, procurement, engineering, compliance and communications can each connect to particular ESG tasks. Explain the connection with evidence from your own work.
- Build a small work sample. For a fictional business, define a reporting boundary, list evidence needed for an emissions inventory, or review a sustainability claim. State your assumptions and sources.
- Check the gap honestly. Compare your sample and experience with the vacancy’s qualifications. A short course can support learning and a portfolio, but it cannot replace required years of relevant work.
A simple portfolio prompt
Imagine an office claims a 20% cut in electricity use. What baseline period, meter or bill records, site boundaries and calculation would you request before repeating that claim? Write a one-page evidence checklist. It demonstrates your reasoning more clearly than quoting a salary headline.
